Legal History

Sri Lanka has a rich legal history dating back to the ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura (377 BCE to 1017 CE). The legal system is a mix of English common law, Roman-Dutch law, and customary law. The country gained independence from Britain in 1948 and adopted a new constitution in 1972, establishing Sri Lanka as a republic.
